More About Provence Alpes Cote D’Azur?
The Provence Alpes Cote D’Azur region is perfectly situated between the Mediterranean and the Alps. Extraordinary scenery combined with a rich history, exceptional archaeological and architectural interest, a multitude of celebrations and festivals, world famous resorts of Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Saint-Tropez and a wonderful climate makes this region one of the best destinations for a wedding in France. And because it has excellent communication and transport links it’s the ideal location for corporate events too!
This is an extraordinary region of France; the generous warmth of Provence, the assertive character of the Alps and the vibrant sparkle of the Côte d’Azur.
And There’s More!
From the Rhône to Italy, from Hautes-Alpes to the Mediterranean, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region fascinates with its intoxicating fragrances, sublime landscapes and fabulous light.
While film stars converge on Cannes, and the jet-set hits the port of St-Tropez, more authentic sites can still be unearthed, such as St-Paul-de-Vence and the Gorges du Verdon. The whole region is imbued with charm, from the calanques of Cassis to the lemon trees of Menton, from the snow-capped mountains of the Queyras to the picturesque Valley of Wonders, from Avignon, “Cité des Papes”. In the ceramic-making village of Moustiers-Ste-Marie, history and traditions come to life in a fabulous natural setting or soak up the atmosphere and stroll around the fish market of Marseille’s old port, and taste a Rhône Valley wine on a café terrace and watch the boules players hotly dispute a game in the shade of the plane trees.
The Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur region brings together six departments:
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (04) | Haute-Alpes (05) | Alpes-Maritimes (06) | Bouches-du-Rhône (13) | Var (83) | Vaucluse (84)
Provence and the Côte d’Azur are made for explorers; fields of lavender, ancient olive groves, clifftop roads, maquis-cloaked hills and snow-tipped mountains. Two thousand years ago Provence was part of Roman Gaul, and the Romans left behind a fabulous legacy of monuments, structures and buildings – not to mention some of France’s first vineyards. The area is littered with Roman remains, including an amphitheatre in Arles, a theatre in Orange, many bridges including a fine one near Bonniuex, and even whole towns near St-Rémy de Provence and Vaison-la-Romaine. With a collection of prehistoric sites, medieval abbeys, elegant churches and art deco buildings, Provence can feel like a living history book.
Head to Marseille, Saint-Tropez or La Ciotat to relish a glass of rosé wine on the port as you gaze at the old-fashioned “pointu” fishing boats bobbing on the waves. In Arles and Avignon, voyage back in time to the architectural treasures of Roman and medieval ages with exceptional, sun-drenched and colourful sceneries of endless vines, lavender fields, and the Verdon Canyon. The Camargue is different again, a wild jewel of Provence, where bulls, horses and pink flamingos thrive. The irresistible French Riviera beats to the rhythm of a packed events schedule, attracting visitors from all over the world. Sequins sparkle at the Cannes Film Festival, dance the night away at the Nice Carnival, and of course there is Monaco and Saint-Tropez and Antibes. The lively seaside resorts like Juan-les-Pins, Sainte-Maxime and Hyères, beautiful beaches, the wild creeks of the Estérel and charming villages like Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Èze and Bormes-les-Mimosas. And citrus fruit fills the air at the Fête du Citron in Menton and perfume creation in the iconic town of Grasse reminds us that the French Riviera is a Garden of Eden for flowers. This region really does have it all.
Have your Year in Provence
Head inland to revel in the fresh air of the French Southern Alps, where verdant meadows, snowy peaks and stony slopes provide a kingdom of marmots, chamois and ibex goats. You can even enjoy a unique encounter with wolves in Parc National du Mercantour or discover the fascinating architectural legacy of Vauban in Briançon and Mont-Dauphin, beautifully-crafted local woodwork and earthenware, and delicious culinary specialities overflowing with authenticity. The coast gives way to the multicoloured landscapes of Parc National du Mercantour and geological sites such as the Vallée des Merveilles.
Famous Provence, the scene of books and movies and of course so highly prized by artists. This land of Van Gogh, Rénoir, Chagall, Cézanne and Picasso, famed for its light, described by Matisse as ‘soft and tender, despite its brilliance’a journey to Provence and the Côte d’Azur feels like stepping into an impressionist canvas. You can’t talk about Provence without mentioning the magnificent hillside villages of Luberon, the old city of the Avignon, the old town of Aix-en-Provence, the ancient arenas of Arles, the famous Sainte-Victoire mountain immortalised by the painter Paul Cézanne, the charming small town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the majestic citadel of Sisteron or the ceramics made in the picturesque village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
With all of this your wedding day is going to be amazing!
